The Mimosa Inn
Tryon, NC

Built in 1903, the Mimosa Inn has been a landmark and social gathering place in this area for more than a century. Most long time residents have enjoyed the Inn either as over-night guests, visitors at a social event or wedding or in its dining room. For almost two centuries, the public houses of this estate have received travelers and the spirit of those early days has not departed. There is an air of rest and quiet that calls the traveler and city-weary folk to enjoy the hospitality reminiscent of the old days when this house was the Grand Mansion of the region, where friend and stranger alike received a warm welcome.

In the mid 1800's the coming of the railroad caused a grand hotel with 50 rooms to  be  built to accommodate  travelers coming from the cold northern mid-west and hot  low land areas of the south. This was a time when many people traveled for their health and TB was a common ailment.  Tryon, with its wonderful weather aided by its "Thermal Belt", was found to be advantageous for sufferers of this disease. Some large homes that are now Inns in the Tryon area were even converted into sanitariums to aid in its treatment.

In 1903 the Mimosa Hotel expanded by adding a separate 10,000 square foot 2 story "casino" building which included two bowling alleys, club rooms with billiard and pool tables and a ballroom with a vaulted ceiling which took up the entire second floor.
In 1916 the main hotel building burned to the ground, leaving only the 4 chimneys standing. In an effort to carry on the tradition  the "casino" was remodeled into what is now the Mimosa Inn.

The Mansion is situated on almost four acres and enjoys a spectacular presence when viewed from Highway 108. Entrance is from Mimosa Inn Lane, through flanking pillars, once the entrance to the Grand Estate. Driving down the 300’ driveway past the large patio, you come to the port-cochre’ and it’s accompanying 50’ rear veranda guarding the Inn entrance.
